FESTIVITY: SAINT ANDREW´S DAY

St. Andrew's Night

St. Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland (and Greece and Russia).
St Andrew's Day is celebrated on the 30th November.
It tends to be more popular with Scots who live abroad and there are many St. Andrew's Societies in places where Scots emigrated to.
The St. Andrew's Society in Boston, in the USA, was set up in 1657.
St. Andrew's Day used to be a very popular feast day in Scotland as well.
It was a common custom for farm workers and labourers to go "St. Andra'ing". They would catch rabbits and hares and later on in the day would feast and drink.

There have been debates on and off for some time now about making St. Andrew's Day a public holiday in Scotland.
Many people wonder what they should eat on St. Andrew's day. Because Andrew was a fisherman, it seems appropriate to eat fish. Otherwise you could eat any traditional Scottish food. It used to be that a singed sheep's head was traditional!

St. Andrew's day is celebrated all over the world with fine Scottish food and a ceilidh.
The traditional Scottish recipes below are examples of the kind of fare that could be offered at such a gathering on 30th November to celebrate St Andrew’s day.

Music:The music played at the ceilidh would be well known Scottish melodies such as those found in the Scottish Ceilidh Collections for Fiddlers series or The Fiddle Music of the Scottish Highlands.

Food: Soups Scotch Broth or Scottish Cullen Skink Main Course Choices Scottish Herring in Oatmeal or Salted Herring, Beef in Whisky Sauce, Scotch Eggs, Finnan Haddie, Stovies, Haggis.

Desserts and sweets Scottish Clootie Dumpling or Crannachan Dundee Cake, Angus Toffee, Scottish TabletDrinks Whisky, Rob Roy, Mary Queen of Scots
Some peculiar superstitions have attached themselves to Saint Andrew's feast day. An old German tradition says that single women who wish to marry should ask for Saint Andrew's help on the Eve of his feast, then sleep naked that night; they will see their future husbands in their dreams.

Andrew as the Patron Saint of Scotland.

MORE ABOUT SCOTLAND:

The thistle is widely regarded as the emblem of Scotland. There are several varieties of thistle, most of them common weeds throughout the British Isles and nearly all characterised by extreme prickliness. The legend of how the thistle came to be adopted by the Scots tells of how a group of Scots were sleeping in a field when a group of marauding Vikings crept up to attack. Fortunately one of the Vikings stood on a thistle, whose prickles penetrated through to his foot and made him yell with pain, waking the sleeping Scots who were able to fight off their attackers. So, from that day, or so the story goes, the thistle has been adopted as Scotland's national emblem.
The cross St. Andrew was crucified on has been adopted as the national flag of Scotland, later incorporated into the Union Flag. One old legend says that in 832 AD an army of Scots led by King Angus was facing an army from the kingdom of Northumbria under Athelstan. The Scottish king prayed to St Andrew for help, and the saltire of St Andrew (the diagonal cross) appeared above them against the background of a clear blue sky. This encouraged the Scots and the battle was duly fought and won, and the saltire is now the national flag (reputedly the oldest national flag in Europe.)
  1. What´s the emblem of Scotland?
  2. What are the colours of the flag? Can you draw the flag? Draw one.
  3. Why is the flag like this, depending on a legend.

The Loch Ness Monster.

Over the past forty years, more than one thousand people have claimed to see the monster which according to tradition, lives in the Loch Ness. Most of the appearances were in bright sunlight in calm conditions. Although the beast was often seen from a distance, people were convinced they were looking at a large animal, of which most of the body was hidden beneath the water.
If it exists, it is most unlikely that the Loch Ness monster is a single animal.
A prehistoric creature, living alone in Loch Ness, isolated from others of its species, must have to be millions of years old. For the species to survive there must be quite a large colony. there are great differences in the reported sizes of the animals seen, and this could be explained by the presence of adults and young. The colony theory is also supported by nearly simultaneous appearances in different parts of the lake.
Stories of a beast in Loch Ness are not new, for they date back at least to the sixth century. In fact, it is not surprising that waters like Loch Ness produce legends. the lake has an average depht of 120 metres, and it is fed by eight rivers and innumerable streams. Each of these tours the dirty soil of the hills into the lake. Consequently, the water is dark. Divers working with powerful lamps 15 metres below the surface are unable to see more than 2 metres around them. So the mystery continues and it is perhaps more exciting, than any final scientific solution.

EXERCISES 1.-
Even though , there is no scientific proof of the existente of the Loch Ness mosnster, do you relieve it exists?

2.- Describe how you imagine the Loch Ness monster: its size, shape, colour, etc.
3. Mention three reasons that support the theory that there must be a colony of animals in Loch Ness.

4 .- Would you like to swim in Loch Ness? Give reasons.

5.- Tell the story of the film Gremlins. If you have not seen the film, invent a store with monstruous creatures.

True or False:

1.- The Loch Ness monster has alway appeared in daylight.
2.- The store of the monster is an old one.
3.- The water is dark due to people throwing dirt into it.

THANKSGIVING (Celebration in America the last Thursday in November)

THE HISTORY OF THANKSGIVING

WORKSHEET 1
THE STORY OF THANKSGIVING

After reading the presentation, create your version of what it would have been like if you were one of the original Pilgrims who arrived on the Mayflower. While writing your story, consider the following :

Why did you leave England?
Did all of your family go on the Mayflower?
Did all of your family survive?
What was it like living on a ship? How long did the trip take?
What was it like when you first walked on land in the new world?
Did you make friends with any of the Indians?
How did you survive the first winter?
What was the first Thanksgiving like, and what did you eat?
........................................................................................................
..........................................................................................................(100 words)

WORKSHEET 2

HOW DID THANKSGIVING BEGIN?

Fill in the blanks and answer the following questions:

Well, you’ve probably heard of the Pilgrims They were settlers from England who came to the New World seeking ………………. and ………………… freedom.
Their ship, the Mayflower landed in Plymouth, Mass in 1620.
Way before the Pilgrims ever arrived, a …………….. American tribe called the Wampanoag inhabited much of what we now know as Rhode Island in Massachusetts including Plymouth.
Right when the Pilgrims landed with the Mayflower they were in Wampanoag territory.

What happened to the ill-prepared Pilgrims? …………………………………………………………………
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Why did they find it so difficult to survive? ……………………………………………………………………
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

An English-speaking Wampanoag named Squanto decided to help the Pilgrims and teach them how to survive.

How did Squanto and his tribe help the Pilgrims? ………………………………………………………….
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

They held a Thanksgiving …………. to celebrate their good fortune.

Right, Thanksgiving was not an entirely new concept for the Pilgrims or the Indians. The Pilgrims had held an annual Thanksgiving feast in November, it was a religious holiday. The American Indians actually held several …………….festivals throughout the year. But this was the first Thanksgiving celebration that they had together. It happened sometime between September, 22 and November,11, 1621.
Well, Captain Miles Standish, the leader of the Pilgrims invited the chief Massasoit, the Wampanoag leaders and their immediate families to join them for the Thanksgiving celebration.

How many Indians turned up?...............................................................................................................

Massasoit, the Wampanoag leader sent his men to get more food so that everybody could eat.
Yeah, I guess that they were good house guests.

What sort of food did they have for the occasion? …………………………………………………………..
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Their first Thanksgiving lasted 3 whole days.
It was cool because two groups of people with little in common came together formed a friendship agreement. Part of that agreement allowed the Pilgrims to build their new town of Plymouth. Sadly, the American Indian-Pilgrim friendship didn’t last forever.

Why is it that their friendship was short-lived? ………………………………………………………………..
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

What were the major differences between the two peoples that lead them to distrust one another?......……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Eventually, the new Americans forced most of the native Americans off their lands. There are still some Wampanaog people living in Massachusetts, not that that makes up for anything.

Today, many Americans carry on the tradition of Thanksgiving with a dinner to symbolize how much we all have to be thankful for. And also to remember that first Thanksgiving with a spirit of ……………. and ……………………that bring two different sorts of people together at one dinner table.

Exercises:
Read the text and say if the sentences are true or false:

Facts about Halloween
The origin of Halloween dates back at least 3,000 years to the Celtic celebration of Samhain (pronounced "sow-ain"). The festival was held starting at sundown on October 31st and lasted until sundown on November 1st. It was similar to the modern practice of the New Years celebration. On this magical night, glowing jack-o-lanterns, carved from turnips or gourds, were set on porches and in windows to welcome deceased loved ones, but also to act as protection against malevolent spirits. Burning lumps of coal were used inside as a source of light, later to be replaced by candles.Samhain was not the name of a "Lord of the Dead", no historical evidence has ever been found to back this up, it was simply the name of the festival and meant "Summer's End". It was believed that the souls of the dead were closest to this world and was the best time to contact them to say good bye or ask for assistance. It was also a celebration of the harvest. It is still treated as such today by those who practice Wicca or other nature based religions. It has absolutely nothing to do with satan, who was a creation of the Christian church. When European settlers, particularly the Irish, arrived in America they found the native pumpkin to be larger, easier to carve and seemed the perfect choice for jack-o-lanterns. Halloween didn't really catch on big in this country until the late 1800's and has been celebrated in many ways ever since!

Halloween Fun by Makoto Nakazawa
Halloween is one of the most famous holidays in the U.S., and it is on October 31. People carve pumpkins and make funny faces on them. These are called "Jack-O-Lanterns." On October 31, children wear a special costume such as a witch, ghost, or clown. They go to many houses and they knock on the door saying, "Trick or Treat!" It means that if people don't give them a treat, they will play some kind of trick on the household. So, usually people give candy to them.I carved my first Halloween pumpkin at my Friendship Family's house. First, I cut open the top of the pumpkin and pulled the seeds out. It was not good for me because it was sticky and smelled bad. I had never carved a pumpkin, so it was interesting for me. Next, I carved the eyes and the mouth. I wanted to make a face like a pirate. When I finished making the face, I put a candle inside. It was very beautiful, so I was happy.I had a good experience because I learned one new idea about American culture by taking part in it. I think Halloween is an interesting American holiday which involves all family members and neighbors too!
